Tonight, all over the world, little ones stand on front steps in capes and cardboard wings. They knock. A door swings open. Warm light spills out, and for one bright second everyone on both sides of the threshold is smiling.
Doorways hold a quiet kind of magic. Tonight is full of them.
It’s the last night of October, too. Tomorrow a fresh month begins, and the year leans into its slower, softer half.
Every Doorway Is a Fresh Page Your Mind Already Knows How to Turn
Have you ever walked into the kitchen and lost track of why you came? Oof, yeah, me too. Many times a week.
Psychologist Gabriel Radvansky and his team at the University of Notre Dame studied exactly this moment. People who walked through a doorway recalled less about the room they’d just left than people who crossed the same distance inside one room. Their explanation is beautiful. The mind treats a doorway as an event boundary, a natural place to close one chapter and open the next.
I love that. Your brain is built for fresh starts. Every threshold is a small, built-in invitation to set something down.
Carry Less Through the Door Tonight
So much of what we carry from room to room is optional. The tone of an email. The worry that followed you home. The old story about who you are.
Instead of asking how do I hold all of this, try asking what I could gently leave in the last room.
Lightness is a choice you get to make at every doorway.
Let the Month End Like a Good Chapter Ends
Endings deserve a little ceremony. A good book closes each chapter with a breath, and you get to do the same with October.
Name what this month gave you. Name what you’re ready to release. Then turn the page with a grateful heart.
Your Practice for Today. The Threshold Pause
Pick one doorway you’ll walk through often today. Your front door, the bedroom, the kitchen.
- Each time you reach it, pause for one breath with your hand on the frame.
- Silently name one thing you’re setting down on this side.
- Step through and name one thing you’re welcoming on the other side.
Tonight, before bed, do it one last time for October. Set the month down. Welcome November.
Tomorrow Morning, You Get to Walk Through a Brand New Door
Think back to those little ones on the front steps, the door swinging open, the warm light spilling out.
Every threshold you cross carries that same light. You get to step through lighter, kinder and wide awake.
Start early. Start fresh. Start today.
