Every day, quietly and without fanfare, people all over the world are doing remarkable things — bridging divides, protecting the vulnerable, building toward a better tomorrow. Here’s what’s lighting up our feed today, March 10.

A Bridge Between Service and Civilian Life

For veterans leaving military service, the hardest question is often simply: what’s next? In Montana, a program called SkillBridge is answering that question in a meaningful way. The DOD SkillBridge program pairs transitioning service members with civilian employers during their final six months of service — letting them build real-world experience while still receiving full military pay and benefits.

In Great Falls — home to Malmstrom Air Force Base — organisations like Montana Opportunities for Veterans Everywhere (M.O.V.E.) are working one-on-one with each service member to custom-build an opportunity that matches their interests. Air Force veteran Paul Lamelin, who spent 20 years in the military, used SkillBridge to transition into a role as a SNAP compliance auditor with the Montana Department of Public Health. “SkillBridge has definitely helped me leverage what I wouldn’t have been able to do,” he said. “It prepared me for that transition.”

World Wildlife Day: A Unified Stand for Nature

March 3 was World Wildlife Day 2026, and its theme — “Medicinal and aromatic plants: conserving health, heritage and livelihoods” — is a reminder that protecting nature means protecting the very foundations of human health and culture. The Jane Goodall Institute, applying its community-centred Animals–People–Environment model for over 45 years, is at the forefront of turning that vision into action.

At the same time, a cascade of new protections for animals is taking effect in 2026. South Korea has committed to ending its bear bile industry, freeing moon bears from decades of confinement. In California, a new law against declawing cats is now in force, while Proposition 12 — the strongest farmed-animal protection law in the U.S. — enters its third year. Small steps, taken together, that add up to a more humane world.

Mortgage Rates Hit a Multi-Year Low — Good News for Homebuyers

Here’s some welcome news for anyone dreaming of owning a home: the average 30-year mortgage rate has dropped to 5.87% as of today — significantly down from 6.63% in early March 2025, and nearly a full point below where it was in early 2024. For a 15-year term, rates have fallen to around 5.50%.

With the Federal Reserve meeting next week (March 17–18) to discuss the future of rate cuts, the trend is looking hopeful. Analysts note that qualified buyers may even find rates closer to 5% — making this a genuine window of opportunity for first-time homeowners and those looking to refinance.

Students Learn Without Harm — Schools Embrace Lab Alternatives

In a quiet but meaningful shift in science education, Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Massachusetts has received a grant to purchase ten life-size anatomical rat models for its biotechnology program — eliminating the need for traditional animal dissection entirely. Each model features detachable organs, interchangeable systems, and a numbered key to support learning that is just as thorough, and far more humane.

The development is part of a broader momentum: in the UK, the government has published a roadmap to phase out regulatory animal testing for skin and eye irritation by the end of 2026, moving toward human-relevant science alternatives like organ-on-a-chip models and 3D-printed tissues. Progress isn’t always loud — but it keeps showing up.
