We Wrote One True Thing for Every Morning of the Year

For a while now we have started our mornings the same way. Before the emails, before the plans, before the day arrives with its list of demands, we sit with one small idea and let it settle. Something to hold. Something to carry into the hours ahead.

Over time those small ideas became a collection. Then the collection became a year. Three hundred and sixty-five of them, one for each morning, each one a truth and a thing to do with it.

We want to tell you what we made, and why the year moves the way it does.

The Shape of a Line

Each morning offers two lines. The first is the truth. The second is the carry.

The truth is the idea itself, said plainly enough to remember. You are already the person who begins. The carry is what you do with it while the day happens around you. Begin one small thing while the house still sleeps.

We built them this way on purpose. An idea you merely agree with evaporates by lunch. An idea with a small action attached to it has somewhere to live. The carry turns a lovely sentence into a lived morning, and the lived morning is the entire point.

Why the Year Moves the Way It Does

We could have shuffled these at random. Instead we let the year walk the way a year actually walks.

January begins, because beginnings belong to January. February comes home to the body, the faithful thing that carried you through winter. March learns to pay attention. April lets go. Through spring and summer the year moves through good work, through the people you belong to, through the meaning you are here to make. August meets you at rock bottom and reminds you it is simply the beginning. Autumn turns toward what matters and what lasts, the four thousand weeks you actually get. And December arrives where you were the whole time, which is already whole.

Then the loop closes. The final morning of the year reads start early today, and every day after. The first morning answers it. You are already the person who begins. The year hands you back to yourself and starts again.

One Line From Each Month

Rather than describe the whole collection, we would love to simply hand you one from each season. Read them slowly. See which one lands.

  • January. You have permission to start before you feel ready. Ready arrives later, and it arrives to people who started.
  • February. Your body has been carrying you faithfully this whole time. Thank it today, out loud.
  • March. What you notice becomes your life. Notice something generous today.
  • April. The tighter the grip, the smaller the life. Loosen one grip today.
  • May. Finished beats perfect, always. Finish something today.
  • June. The friend you keep meaning to call is meaning to call you. Call today.
  • July. You are already a knowledge creator. Create one small thing today.
  • August. You have survived every single one of your worst days. Remember that today.
  • September. Most of what you do matters very little, and a few things matter enormously. Find the few today.
  • October. Every ordinary day is one you will miss. Love this one today.
  • November. You are only as rich as you are willing to notice. Get rich today, quietly.
  • December. You are already whole. Live today from there.

How We Hope You Use Them

One a day, ideally early, while the light is still low and the house is still quiet. Read the truth. Take the carry with you. Let the day do the rest.

Some mornings the line will meet you exactly where you stand. Other mornings it will feel like a coat that belongs to someone else, and you will wear it anyway, and by afternoon it will fit. Both are the practice working.

You are welcome to read them in order, starting wherever the calendar has you. You are equally welcome to open to a random morning and trust that the one you landed on is the one you needed. The collection is patient. It will keep.

What Comes Next

We are gathering all three hundred and sixty-five into a book, each one carrying a short letter underneath, written to you the way we would talk to you across a kitchen table with the light still low. We are also building something for your actual mornings, a gentle way to begin the day with one of these lines waiting for you. We will share both here first.

For now, take the one that found you today and carry it. That is the whole practice, and you already know how to do it.

You have begun a thousand things. Begin this one too.

With love,
Paolo & Sarah
