Happy Saturday! While you were sleeping in, the world kept delivering hope. Here’s your 5-minute boost of everything that’s going right.
🏆 THE BIG WIN: CHESS GETS A NEW KING
India’s Gukesh Just Rewrote Chess History at 18
Eighteen-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest undisputed chess world champion in history this week, defeating China’s Ding Liren in a dramatic final game in Singapore. He’s four years younger than Garry Kasparov was when he set the previous record in 1985.
The moment: Game 14 looked like it was heading for a draw—which would’ve meant nerve-wracking rapid tiebreaks. But then Ding made a critical blunder under pressure, and Gukesh seized his childhood dream. The final score: 7.5-6.5.
What he said: “I’ve been dreaming about living this moment for more than 10 years. Every chess player wants to experience this, and very few get the chance.”
Why this matters: Gukesh became a grandmaster at 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days old—missing the record by just 17 days. He’s the second Indian world champion after the legendary Viswanathan Anand. And he just proved that age is just a number when you’ve got vision, dedication, and a killer endgame.
Next up: Gukesh and his team are going bungee jumping to celebrate. Then it’s off to the World Rapid & Blitz Championships in New York after Christmas. The sky—literally—is the limit.
🐝 GOOD NEWS: THE BEES ARE BOUNCING BACK
Scientists Just Solved An “Impossible” Problem
Years in the making, scientists at the Bumble Bee Conservation Lab successfully raised a generation of yellow-banded bumble bees in 2024—something once deemed impossible.
The backstory: Yellow-banded bumble bees were once common across southern Canada and much of the United States. Their populations declined sharply in the mid-1990s from threats including pathogens, pesticides, and habitat loss. Scientists have been working for decades to give bees a helping hand, but it wasn’t until recently that they discovered this conservation gap and cracked the code.
Why bees = everything: These little pollinators aren’t just cute—they’re critical to the survival of plants, animals, and yes, humans too. They pollinate the food you eat, keep ecosystems thriving, and basically hold the whole “circle of life” thing together.
The vibe: Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs happen quietly. While everyone was obsessing over AI and quantum computers, scientists were out here saving the species that actually keep us alive. Priorities, people.
🐢 MORE GOOD NEWS: 1,000 TURTLES GET A SECOND CHANCE
Bangladesh Just Pulled Off Its Largest Wildlife Rescue Ever
On Monday, December 9, wildlife officers in Bangladesh responded to an anonymous tip that led them to a warehouse where they found nearly 1,000 endangered turtles at the center of an abandoned smuggling operation. It was the largest-ever rescue of endangered freshwater turtles in the country’s history—and they arrived just in time.
The miracle: All the turtles were still alive. Every single one.
Why this rules: All of the rescued turtles are protected under the 2012 Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, which forbids their captivity, transportation, and sale. Plus, tortoises and freshwater turtles are vital for keeping waterways clean and their ecosystems thriving. When you save the turtles, you save the whole habitat.
💭 QUOTE TO CARRY INTO YOUR WEEKEND
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
— Eleanor Roosevelt
Gukesh dreamed of being world champion at 8 years old. Scientists dreamed of saving the bees when everyone said it was impossible. Those turtles just got their freedom back because someone believed change was possible.
Your dreams? They’re valid too. Stop waiting for permission. Start small. Start today.
🍽️ RECIPE DROP: FUEL YOUR SATURDAY RIGHT
Crispy Bachan’s Tofu
Your Saturday game-changer | From makepurethyheart.com
Because Saturday deserves food that’s crispy, saucy, and ridiculously satisfying.
Why you’ll crush this today:
- Golden, crispy edges meet tender centers
- Ready in under 30 minutes (faster than takeout)
- Packed with plant-based protein
- One technique that’ll change how you see tofu forever
What you need:
- 1 block extra-firm tofu (pressed and cubed)
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for extra crunch)
- ¼ cup Bachan’s Japanese BBQ Sauce (the MVP)
- 2-3 tbsp neutral oil for pan-frying
- Scallions for garnish
- Salt, garlic powder, black pepper
The Saturday method:
- Boil tofu in salted water for 3 minutes (this step changes everything—firms it up beautifully)
- Dredge in flour + seasonings for that crispy coating
- Pan-fry until golden on all sides (6-8 minutes of pure satisfaction)
- Toss in Bachan’s sauce while it’s hot
- Top with sliced scallions and devour
Pro secret: The boiling step is what separates amateur tofu from chef-level tofu. It creates structure and helps the coating stick perfectly.
Serve over rice, toss with noodles, or eat straight from the bowl. No judgment here.

✨ YOUR SATURDAY CHALLENGE
This weekend, channel your inner Gukesh. Pick one “impossible” thing you’ve been putting off and take the first tiny step toward it.
Maybe it’s:
- Finally starting that creative project
- Reaching out to that person
- Trying that new workout
- Cooking something you’ve never made before
- Learning that thing you said you’d learn “someday”
The world is full of people who said “that’s impossible”—until someone did it anyway.
18-year-olds are becoming world champions. Scientists are saving species from extinction. Turtles are getting rescued by the thousands. If they can do the hard stuff, you can absolutely handle whatever’s on your list.
Remember: Every grandmaster started as a beginner. Every conservation breakthrough started with someone who refused to give up. Every rescue started with one person who cared enough to act.
Go be that person. Your Saturday awaits.
See you Sunday with more proof that the world is better than the headlines suggest.
Enjoyed this? Forward to someone who could use a Saturday smile.
