๐Ÿฅ‡ THEY DID IT. USA WINS GOLD IN OVERTIME.

Team USA Defeats Canada 2-1 in Overtime โ€” Hilary Knight’s Storybook Ending

IT HAPPENED.

In one of the greatest hockey games ever played, Team USA women’s hockey defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime to win Olympic gold yesterday (Feb. 19) in Milan.

How It Went Down:

With 2:04 remaining in regulation, trailing 1-0, the U.S. pulled goalie Aerin Frankel for an extra attacker. 22-year-old Laila Edwards launched a rocket from the point. 36-year-old captain Hilary Knight โ€” in her fifth and final Olympics โ€” tipped it past Canada’s goalie.

Tie game. Overtime.

Then, 4 minutes and 7 seconds into sudden-death 3-on-3 overtime, Megan Keller received a perfect cross-ice pass from Taylor Heise, made an incredible move on the goalie, and buried a backhand under the pad.

Gold medal. Storybook ending. Cinema.

The Records Hilary Knight Broke:

  • Most Olympic goals by a U.S. women’s hockey player (15)
  • Most Olympic points by a U.S. women’s hockey player (33)
  • Most decorated American hockey player in Olympic history (2 golds, 3 silvers across 5 Olympics)
  • Fifth and final Olympics โ€” going out as a champion

The Numbers:

  • USA went 7-0 in the tournament, outscoring opponents 33-2
  • Five consecutive shutouts before Canada scored
  • 352 minutes, 17 seconds without allowing a goal
  • Goalie Aerin Frankel: 30 saves in the gold medal game
  • Eighth straight win over Canada dating back to 2025

Why This Matters:

This was supposed to be Canada’s game. They held the lead for nearly 40 straight minutes. They’ve won 5 of 7 Olympic golds in women’s hockey history. Marie-Philip Poulin โ€” “Captain Clutch” โ€” has scored game-winning goals in all three of her previous Olympic golds (2010, 2014, 2022).

But Team USA refused to lose. Knight delivered when it mattered most. And in her final Olympic game, she went out exactly how she wanted: as a champion.

What Knight Said:

“There was no way we were losing this game. That’s all. Simple as that.”

“Mission accomplished. I’m really excited that we got the win, really grateful. Decades from now, we’ll be able to reunite and celebrate this team.”

What This Means Going Forward:

Team USA bet on youth development. Average age: under 27. Seven players still in college.

Canada bet on experience. Average age: 30. Zero college players.

USA’s gamble paid off. They now have eight straight wins over Canada and the youngest, deepest talent pool in the sport.

The rivalry isn’t over. But the Americans just proved they’re the new standard.
